Altos Coverage Map

Overview

The Altos Coverage Map is a county map indicating the areas of coverage for Altos Research.

Altos started with an Excel file listing the counties they cover. They requested assistance converting this to map form. In just a few hours time, HaveAByte was able to locate a ready-made county map provided by the Census Bureau in the form of a Google Fusion Table with the county boundaries already defined. Many developers would have started with a database of county boundaries and then built a custom solution around that – which we would have done if necessary, but for the purposes here, it was not.

It was determined early on that Google Fusion Tables allows HTML-embedding of the map, zoomed to whichever point at whichever level, andidate.

With some relatively small configuration changes, it was possible to decide which counties are covered and publish the map. This was possible programmatically but it was decided it was easier to just have a few employees knock it out manually.

It is a great example of avoiding over-development, working quickly, with as little cost to the customer as possible.
